Practicum Log #13: Video Editing

I used this image of the library learning commons area for an instructional video Iā€™m creating on how to use primary sources effectively.

Thursday, June 20, 2024 from 1:00-5:00 PM

After a day to celebrate Juneteenth, I was back on campus to work through editing the primary source instruction video. I finished out all of the instructions slides and then presented my finished draft to Katherine for feedback. Katherine and I talked through changing out some of the template icons for specific icons for visual learners. The video has example slides that show kinds of primary resources and secondary resources. The first draft of the video provides a scenario with a research project using the Civil Rights Movement. We discussed adding a second research scenario that would address how a STEM major might use primary and secondary resources. My original draft also had a screen shot of the library website homepage, and Katherine and I talked about doing a screen capture that would show the students how to navigate to the Primary Source LibGuide available on the website. Katherine showed me her progress on the escape game for initial library instruction in the fall, and I provided some feedback for her.

I took the suggestions Katherine and I discussed and went back to the drawing board, developing the example slides to have icons that would match the words: an envelope for letters, a simple art gallery for art, etc. I then added a STEM example using primary sources from our distinctive collection. I also made a screencast of website navigation using OMI, a software I downloaded for one of my grad classes. I finished up the video portion of editing, and I will work on writing a script for voiceover tomorrow.

Full Schedule: l will be working 10:00-2:00 from May 28th to June 7th, M-F online. (The campus is undergoing some construction and all of the librarians are working from home.)

Then, from June 10 - July 19th, I will be working 1:00-5:00 on campus at Southwestern University. I will more than likely finish by July 12th, but I'm adding a week for wiggle room. This should lead to 128 hours.
