Practicum Log #14: Script Editing and Upward Bound Planning

A view of campus on my way to the library today. The campus is undergoing construction in several places, including the library’s distinctive collection wing. Southwestern is also hosting Sprog Orientation (A “sprog” is a term used for a new pirate. Who knew?), so students are touring campus this week.

Friday, June 21, 2024 from 1:00-5:00 PM

Today during my library shift, I worked on writing and editing my script for the primary source video. I showed Katherine Hooker and Megan Firestone what I had so far and asked for feedback. After for working for awhile on my script, Katherine, Megan, and I met to finalize plans for the Upward Bound students coming on campus next week. Megan is planning activities for the students as well as adding a research component for a project. This is a new addition to Upward Bound camps in the past, so she wanted to make sure that the students would have enough to do without the research portion being too much. The students will be studying cuneiform by observing a piece of cuneiform the library has in distinctive collections, researching other types of cuneiform and what they were used for, where those pieces were found, and where they reside now. The students will make posters using Canva, spend other time doing Maker Space crafts and games, and then the library staff will give them 3D printed versions of their cuneiform tablets as well.

Megan, Katherine, and I went over the calendar, lists of activities, and then made sure they had the supplies needed for next week. Additionally, Megan and Katherine walked through a purchase spreadsheet for craft supplies and other fun event items for a Bob Ross Birthday Party community event in the fall. Overall, the staff here is very welcoming and kind to me. They always explain new ideas or what shorthand they are using in conversation, and they ask for my input, which is really nice as well.

Full Schedule: l will be working 10:00-2:00 from May 28th to June 7th, M-F online. (The campus is undergoing some construction and all of the librarians are working from home.)

Then, from June 10 - July 19th, I will be working 1:00-5:00 on campus at Southwestern University. I will more than likely finish by July 12th, but I'm adding a week for wiggle room. This should lead to 128 hours.
