Practicum Log #12: Primary Source Video Creation
Tuesday, June 18, 2024 from 1:00-5:00 PM
Today, I worked on campus in further developing a primary source instruction module that the instruction staff can use for students who visit the library for distinctive collections. The goal is to have both an asynchronous video as well as a presentation with similar style that the instruction librarians can use in direct instruction. I learned how to use Canva for video creation, choosing a template, developing slides with content, and adjusting the design as needed. After I finished about half of the slides and content, I presented my work to Katherine to make sure I was headed on the right track for their objectives. I finished most of the module during my time today. Tomorrow is Juneteenth, so the library will be closed. When I go back on Thursday, I hope to finish up the slides and then write a script for the video to do a voiceover.
While I worked today, several campus tours brought students into the library, so that was an interesting shift from what I’ve experienced so far. The library has been rather empty during the summer since Southwestern doesn’t really have many summer school classes or many summer programs, like camps. Instead, the campus has construction happening. The library had a huge renovation completed on the distinctive collections wing, fixing some foundation issues on the older building, replacing carpet, adding new tile, and other work. The collections had to be moved into storage for most of the school year, and they will be moving back into the space over the next couple of weeks.
Full Schedule: l will be working 10:00-2:00 from May 28th to June 7th, M-F online. (The campus is undergoing some construction and all of the librarians are working from home.)
Then, from June 10 - July 19th, I will be working 1:00-5:00 on campus at Southwestern University. I will more than likely finish by July 12th, but I'm adding a week for wiggle room. This should lead to 128 hours.
