Practicum Log #17: Final Day of Upward Bound

Megan Firestone, head of Distinctive Collections at Southwestern University, shows Upward Bound Students the library’s copy of The Gradual, a 15th century Spanish book of music, hand painted on parchment and wood.

Thursday, June 27, 2024 from 1:00-5:00 PM

The Upward Bound students finished up their poster and prepared what they were going to say for their presentation on Friday. Then, Megan Firestone brought in a book from the distinctive collections from 15th century Spain. It’s a hand-painted music book on parchment and wood. Megan needed to get a good page for a high quality picture. The marketing department at SU is creating a huge poster display for the newly renovated distinctive collections building. The posters will feature highlights from the collection. Megan showed the students the book and talked to them about they get pictures for websites and posters. She also brought in the piece of cuneiform that Southwestern has in its collection and showed the students.

After the students finished up their rehearsing for their presentation, they went back to the maker lab, where they painted 3D printed highland cows, used the library’s button maker, and made pages in their journals. After the Upward Bound Students left, the library staff helped move chairs back into the Distinctive Collections building. The renovation has taken about 18 months, so the staff is excited to get everything back where it needs to go. Megan showed me the new facility and where all of the new updates will be going. Then, Emily, Megan, and I went to Megan’s office, and I watched Megan and Emily type up a proposal for presenting at TLA next year.

Full Schedule: l will be working 10:00-2:00 from May 28th to June 7th, M-F online. (The campus is undergoing some construction and all of the librarians are working from home.) Then, from June 10 - July 19th, I will be working 1:00-5:00 on campus at Southwestern University. I will more than likely finish by July 12th, but I'm adding a week for wiggle room. This should lead to 128 hours.
