Information Literacy Instruction in High School 11th and 12th Graders: A Research Proposal

Problem Statement

Students need consistent information literacy instruction to prepare for college; however, the students at Studio Preparatory in Austin, Texas, are dependent on class instructors for information literacy instruction. The class instructors providing information literacy instruction are not always trained in implementing information literacy instruction, and they are not using consistent resources and guidelines for finding quality resources. Therefore, they are struggling to meet the information needs of students, especially as students evaluate potential sources for the purpose of writing research papers.

Purpose Statement

The purpose of this study is to document students’ information horizons through neutral questioning, introduce online tutorials provided by Austin Community College, and then determine if the tutorials help students better meet their information literacy needs. The study will implement mixed methods research to determine outcomes.
